texty
About ten minutes, one step at a time. Keep this page open on your phone while you go.
You also need your phone, your WiFi password and a USB phone charger.
Plug the cable into the USB-C port at the back of the dock and into a USB charger. That charges the printer and Texty together. The small light at the front right glows while it charges. If your dock has a little switch on its right side, switch it on.
Open the printer's lid and drop the roll in, with the loose end coming off the roll towards the slot. Pull a few centimetres out and close the lid, so the paper sticks out of the slot.
Then hold the printer's power button for about 2 seconds until its light comes on.
Notes come out blank? The roll is the wrong way round: only one side of thermal paper reacts to heat. Don't connect the printer to its own phone app; it only talks to one device at a time.
Within a minute Texty finds the printer and prints Hi! I'm your new Texty.
The slip has a QR code plus the name and password of Texty's own little WiFi. Nothing printed? See no setup slip.
Open your phone's camera, point it at the QR code and tap Join. Your phone connects to Texty's WiFi, called Texty-XXXX. You can also type the name and password from the slip into your WiFi settings.
A setup page opens by itself. If it doesn't, open 192.168.4.1 in your browser. Choose your home network, type its password and tap Connect. After a few seconds the page says Connected!
Texty needs 2.4 GHz WiFi. Almost every router has it, often under the same name as 5 GHz. WiFi with a sign-in page (hotels, cafés) doesn't work. Wrong password? The page tells you, and you can simply try again.
Texty prints a second slip: Connected to
your WiFi, with a new QR code. Your phone is back on your normal WiFi now. Scan the new code; it opens the Texty app in your browser.
That's your whole account: no password, no email. Friends see this name on your notes. Texty prints Welcome
with your name, and it's yours. You can rename your Texty (say, “Kitchen”) in Settings.
iPhone: in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.
Android: in Chrome, open the ⋮ menu and tap Install app or Add to Home screen.
From now on, open Texty from its icon.
In Settings → Notifications, turn them on for this phone. You'll hear when a note was printed, when someone sent you one and when the paper runs out. On an iPhone this only works in the home-screen app.
Tap Invite a friend. Let them scan the QR code, or share the link. Use a group link for the whole family. Friends don't need a Texty to send you notes.
Tap Write a note, pick your own Texty, write hello and send. A few seconds later it's on paper. Now press the red heart button: that's how you tell the sender you got it.
Wipe the printer lid clean, line the bottom edge of the sticker up with the paper slot and press it on from the middle outwards. Keep the slot itself free. More faces in the sticker maker.
Texty can't see the printer over Bluetooth. Switch the printer on, close the printer's phone app if it is open anywhere, and switch the printer off and on once. The page updates by itself when Texty finds it.
The setup page shows why it didn't work, and Texty prints a Couldn't join
slip. Check the password (capital letters count), make sure you picked a 2.4 GHz network, and try again. Nothing is saved until it works. If the signal is weak, move Texty closer to the router for setup.
While your phone is connected to Texty-XXXX, open http://192.168.4.1 in the browser. If your phone says the WiFi has no internet, choose stay connected. Turning mobile data off for a minute helps too.
When Texty can't find its WiFi for 5 minutes, it prints Can't find my WiFi
with a fresh WiFi QR code. Scan it and pick the new network, like in steps 5 and 6. You stay the owner, and your friends and notes stay too.
Texty is on your WiFi but can't reach the Texty server. It keeps trying by itself. The code says why:
On a phone where you're already logged in, go to Settings → Log in on another phone and scan the code with the new one. No other phone? Hold the heart button on your Texty for 2 seconds: it prints a login QR code for its owner (and you get a notification that it did).
Tap: Sends ♥ to whoever sent the last note, and prints “♥ sent to Anna”.
Hold 2 seconds: Prints a login QR code for the owner.
Hold 10 seconds: Factory reset (see below).
During setup, a tap prints the setup slip again.
Hold the heart button for 10 seconds. Texty forgets its WiFi and its key, prints Reset done
and starts setup again. To take it off your account as well (for example before giving it away), use Settings → Remove this Texty.
In Settings, open your Texty and turn on quiet hours, for example 22:00 to 08:00. Notes sent at night wait and print in the morning; your friends see when theirs will come out.
Texty pauses and nothing gets lost: notes wait on the server, and you get a notification. Put in a new roll, close the lid, and printing carries on by itself. A note that was cut off prints again in full.
