Texty is a small, private project for friends and family – not a company. This page explains in plain language what Texty stores, why, and how you can take it with you or delete it.
This page is also available in German; the German version is the legally binding one.
Who runs Texty
- Texty is run by the person named in the imprint. If you have questions about your data, write to the contact address there.
What Texty stores
- Your name – the one you typed when you joined. It's printed on every note you send and shown to your friends. No email, no phone number, no password.
- A login cookie on your phone. The server only keeps a fingerprint (hash) of it, plus when it was created and last used.
- Your language: the one you picked, or the one your browser uses, so the app, your notes and your notifications come in that language.
- Your friends, groups, blocked people and the invites you made.
- Notes: the printed slip as a black-and-white picture, the text you typed (for typed notes and photo captions), who sent it to which Texty, when it was sent and printed, and whether the owner pressed ♥.
- Texty printers: a device key (stored as a hash), the network (MAC) address, firmware version, when it last connected, Wi-Fi signal and printer state (paper, cover, battery), and its settings such as name, darkness, quiet hours, time zone and who may send to it.
- Push notifications, if you turn them on: the push address your browser gives us, so we can notify you through your browser maker's push service (Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft).
- Morning slip, if you turn it on: its time, what's on it, and the place you picked for the weather (name and coordinates). Your answers to the question of the day (your friends can read them), and your games (board, moves, who won).
- Profile answers, if you give them: your birthday (day and month, the year only if you enter it), an “about me” line, a favourite emoji and a picture (an emoji or a Texty face), plus your browser's time zone. Only your friends see them – never the birth year, only your age if you turn that on – and a hidden birthday isn't shown to anyone. Friends get a birthday reminder the day before (we note that it was sent, so nobody gets it twice). Change or delete all of it in Settings → Profile.
How long
- Note pictures are deleted 90 days after they printed. The note's details (who, to which Texty, when) stay so your history makes sense, until you delete your account.
- Notes you cancel before they print are deleted right away.
- Secret notes 🔒 print only on the chosen Texty and never show up in the app. The server keeps only the printed picture (no text) and deletes it the moment the Texty has printed it, when you cancel, or after 7 days if it never printed. Textys with up-to-date software get it end-to-end encrypted: the server only stores scrambled data that just that Texty can unlock, so not even whoever runs Texty can see it. For Textys that still need an update it's stored like any note until then: sent encrypted, but whoever runs Texty could technically see it. What stays afterwards is only that a secret note was sent, by whom, to which Texty and when.
- Everything else stays until you delete it or your account.
Who can see what
- A note can be seen by you and by the owner of the Texty it was sent to (and, of course, by anyone who picks up the paper). A secret note can't be seen in the app at all – only on paper.
- Your friends see your name, your Texty's name and whether it's online. Group members see each other's names.
- Nobody else. Texty has no ads, no analytics, no tracking and no third-party cookies, and nothing is sold or shared for marketing.
Where the data lives
- The app runs on Vercel (Vercel Inc., USA). Requests may be handled on servers in the EU or the USA.
- The database is hosted by Supabase in the EU.
- Push notifications go through your browser maker's push service.
- For the morning slip's weather, the server asks Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) for the forecast at the coordinates you picked; the city search in Settings sends what you type there. Nothing else about you is sent.
Why (legal basis)
- Texty stores this data to provide the service you asked for: delivering your notes and showing your friends (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Push notifications are only sent if you turn them on (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR); you can turn them off anytime in Settings.
Your choices and rights
- Download everything: Settings → “Download my data” gives you a file with your account, friends, groups, note details and the notes you sent as pictures.
- Delete everything: Settings → “Delete my account”. Notes that already printed stay with their recipients, shown as “Deleted user”.
- Change your name in Settings. Remove or block friends on the Friends page.
- You also have the right to access, correct, restrict or object, and to complain to a data protection authority. For anything you can't do in the app, write to the contact in the imprint.
Shop reservations
- If you reserve something in the shop, we store the product, quantity, your name, your email address and your optional message, with your consent, only to email you when it is available (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR).
- It is not shared or used for anything else. You can withdraw your consent and delete the reservation at any time with the private link on your confirmation page, or by asking us (see the imprint).
The only cookies are the login cookie and, if you pick a language, a language cookie that remembers it. Both are needed for Texty to work the way you asked, so there's no cookie banner.
